Sydney is going to become a 24 hour city, good for daily deals too

It’s a culture shock to a lot of people from other countries when they moved to Australia that the shops shut at 5 or 6pm. And that’s it. There are rarely places to hang out or 24 hour places to dine, other than some pubs and McDonald’s. Although there are a lot of daily deals offering these days, but still under the normal conduct of the merchants’ regular practice.

So what people can do when they are out but late? Go to bars or pubs to drink or go to junk food places to fill themselves up with burgers and chips. It doesn’t sound too healthy for me.

One of the news today is that Sydney probably will get Australia’s first 24-hour library under a City of Sydney proposal - customs house in Circular Quay is the ideal site. The objective is to double the size of the city’s night economy.  City of Sydney would aim to attract a greater mix of people, events and businesses to the city at night and boost annual late-night turnover to $30 billion by 2030. It also advocates restricting growth in key late-night areas such as Kings Cross, while opening commercial rooftops, to dining, bars and cinemas, or forecourts and underground train stations to performances.  Sounds great, isn’t’ it?!

Think about it? If everything has been thought through here turn into reality, Sydney will turn from a city with quiet night life (Apart from drinking Kings Cross) to a real metropolitan city with colorful night life.   The project can also help bring 25% increase in jobs in the city’s night economy by 2030,   I think David Jones and Myer would be happier too since keeping the shop open after 6pm every day (not only late-night shopping day) would increasing shops to 40%, they won’t complain that all online retailers take away the sales.

It’s also a great opportunity for daily deal industry. More merchants means more daily deal opportunities.  And after Sydney, we will have other cities as well – Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide…  So looking forward!
